How did you get here? Tell us about your journey to becoming a professional artist. It took me a long time to reconcile my passion with my profession. To tell you about how I got here, I need to take you back a couple decades when I was a small wildling growing up in Mumbai, India. I believe I was in 1st grade when I managed to get an "F" in art class for not being able to focus enough to paint within the lines. My lovely mom, who probably saw this as my academic requirement back then, enrolled me in an art class that was taught by one of our neighbors in her living room. I was mesmerized by the world of possibilities and color as I saw my first and only official art teachers’ paintings and other art works in her home. Ever since I was a very young student, art lessons were more fun and games than actual training. Perhaps this also served as a way for my mom to get my sister and I out of the house for some after school activities, so she could have a moment of peace at home after her full-time day job. I was instantly hooked. I started drawing pictures I saw on pencil cases, newspapers and story books. As I grew up, academics took over most of my time. If you know someone who has grown up in India, you already know that not excelling in academics is not an option. I tried to convince my parents that I could study art full-time, but back in the 90's, the opportunities to get a job in the field of art were not as well-known and my parents wanted me to get a degree that would help me land a job that would let me earn my financial independence. Growing up as a female in a developing nation makes that a necessity. I worked on my personal art projects on the side all along and even taught a few art and craft projects to the kids in my neighborhood as I got my engineering degree in Information and Technology. I was young and ambitious. I wanted to see the world and define my own future. I worked in the IT service industry for a couple years, but I knew it was not what I was looking for in the long run. I flew to the US to complete my masters. I got my Master of Information Systems degree from the prestigious Kelley school of Business, Indiana. Through it all, I kept working on personal art projects, teaching myself to paint with acrylics, oils, and graphite. I got a fantastic job with one of the big 4’s of the consulting world. It gave me an opportunity to see the world and explore different cultures and places. It helped me define my limits and then exceed them. Eventually, I realized my heart was still with the paintings I worked on after my day job was done. I met my lovely husband Ryan and he brought with him, into my world, a wave of love and support as well as 2 furry love bugs – my dog Chito and my cat Lulu. He helped me revive my dream to make my passion my profession. He inspired me so much that I could feel my passion slowly taking over my logical mind that for so many years had been focused on making a comfortable living, and then he empowered me to not just dream my dream but to take a chance at living my dream It’s said that “comfort zone will eventually kill you” and so I decided it was time to step out of mine and take that leap of faith to put my heart where my head is and pursue my passion as a profession.
